CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING

OCTOBER 21, 2008


President Jennifer Bolton called the meeting to order with 9 members present. President Jennifer Bolton, Pastor Dave, Shirley Kirchner, Lois Gonseth, Tom Reeder, Pat Garrett, Virgil Norris, Charles Niemann, Diane Ziehl and Bill Gronhoff were in attendence. Jennifer welcomed Bill Gronhoff as a new council member. Shirley Kirchner gave the devotions from Mark 6:7.

Jan Kennedy, finance committee chair, opened the meeting with a recap of the 2008-2009 proposed budget. There were several changes and additions as necessary. It was moved by Tom Reeder and seconded by Charles Niemann that the budget be approved. Motion carried.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read individually; Pat Garrett moved and Virgil Norris seconded approval of the minutes. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report: After review of the report, Virgil Norris moved and Tom Reeder seconded the report be approved. Motion carried.

Building Fund Report: Tom Reeder explained how we will soon be coming to the end of Phase Two of the new building fund drive. Phase Two was explained. (Newer members were not here at the conception of the building fund; Phase Three will perhaps include more members.) Diane Ziehl moved and Shirley Kirchner seconded that the report be accepted. Motion carried.

Pastor’s Report: Pastor Dave reported that there are nine people in the new member class: Sheryl Boos, Charles & Mary Evans, Karen Hardwick, Robert & Janet Kuecker, Russ & Carol Ousley, & Geri Riley. He said that the Community Thanksgiving Service will be at First Baptist Church, Sunrise Beach, with the offering going to the Ministerial Alliance. The Community Thanksgiving Dinner with be held from 11:00-1:00 at the Westside Senior Center. Everyone is invited to attend. Pastor reported that approximately 50 people were in attendance at the pot luck held to explain the Process for the Missional Church concept. There was much discussion on how to energize the congregation for a positive vote.

Christian Education Committee Report: Bill Gronhoff reported that Lee Dau’s Sunday School Class began on October 19th and they are studying the book of John. Pastor Dave hopes to start a Bible Study class at the end of October. Date and time to be determined by members of the class. Trunk or Treat was going well, but still needed more donations of candy.  

Finance Committee Report: Shirley Kirchner had no additions to the budget that council previously went over.

Evangelism Committee Report: Barry Olson explained that “Bring a Guest” Sunday would be on November 2nd. No other news to report.  

Long Range Planning Committee Report: Lois Gonseth reported that Kent had 18 of the 20th Anniversary Plates that were recently found. Diane Ziehl moved and Charles Niemann seconded that the plates be available for sale at the annual meeting. Price will be a good will donation. Motion carried. Lois also reported that they had no meeting in September, but that the Stained Glass Committee has gone over six options for the windows. Gloria Peterson will come to the Long Range Planning Committee meeting on October 28th to assure there will be enough light for the bells to play. Lois has asked several people to be on the Long Range Planning Committee for next year.  

Ministry Fund Committee Report: Tom Reeder had nothing to report.

Mutual Ministry Report: Pastor Dave reported that the Mutual Ministry committee held four meetings in September.

Property Committee Report: Property has not met since August 19th.

Social Ministry Report: Pat Garrett reported that there will be the names of 20 children from Show Me Christian Home and CADV on the Social Ministry Christmas tree. She felt “Share the Harvest” campaign has been very successful, and hopes more people will get involved. She noted that it is almost that bell-ringing time of year and more information for the ringers will be available soon

Worship and Music Committee Report: Charles Niemann reported that Altar Guild asked Pastor to train two new communion assistants. They will serve in October and November. Pastor Dave differentiated about the settings and the liturgy being different in the new hymnal. We still need 20 more hymnals. Tracy Garrett is hoping to start a children’s choir - she has past experience in this area. The All Saint’s Sunday Worship will again include a time of remembrance and the placing of a rose on the altar for those who died this past year. Advent begins on the last Sunday in November. The mid-week Advent service will consist of Holden Evening Prayer and a monologue. It was reported that early service is now using kneeling communion.  

Youth Committee Report: Diane Ziehl reported that Nadean (Lindteigen) Shannon had introduced a fund raiser for the youth by recycling old cell phones. Money made by the youth at the 25 Mile Garage Sale was $307.49. This will be an annual event for them. Youth may help with the Advent dinner on December 7th - perhaps with the Pledge of Allegiance and serving dinner rolls. On Nov. 15th the youth are planning a trip to Tan Tar A water park. Diane would like to start a once a month time at church for all interested youth to come after school, gather and learn talents that members of our congregation have to offer. Possible time is a Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. More information will follow.  

Old Business: There are four new council members to be voted on. The Pledge Drive has two envelopes not picked up - will need to get them to the individuals. A reminder that the annual reports are due by January 15th . The agenda for the annual meeting in November was discussed. Lois Gonseth offered to host the Council Christmas party this year. It will be on December 12th at 6:00 p.m. Spouses are invited.

There was no correspondence.

A Pastor Appreciation card was presented to Pastor Dave by the council in honor of Pastor Appreciation week.

Charles Niemann moved and Diane Ziehl seconded that the meeting be adjourned. Motion carried. Next council meeting will by on Tuesday, November 18th.
