KENT MEMORIAL LUTHERAN CHURCH

CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING

JULY 15, 2008

Church Council President Jennifer Bolton called the meeting to order with Joe Poretta, Pastor Beese, Virgil Norris, Tom Reeder, Shirley Kirchner, Bob Harger and Charles Niemann in attendance.   Diane Ziehl had been excused and Lois Gonseth was reported sick.  Jim Chapman has requested his resignation from the council for personal reasons.

Pastor Beese led us in prayer to begin the meeting. The minutes of the previous meeting were read.  Joe Poretta made a motion to accept the minutes as read.  Bob Harger seconded it, it carried.

There was no church treasurer’s report as Gayle Kruse was out of town and had not had a chance to prepare the report.

The Building Fund report was passed out.  Tom Reeder noted that there was $73,623 of interest saved by prepayment.  He noted that we are 22 months into the current 3-year pledge drive and it is being paid off at just about the same percentage as the first 3-year pledge drive.  Joe Poretta made the motion to accept the report.  Charles seconded it.  It carried.

In Pastor Dave’s report for June, he reviewed the wonderful concert that Kathleen Marco and Tracy Garrett presented, the Thriver’s blood drive that netted 54 pints of blood, many of them from our own church members, the lightning strike that caused problems with the organ and the sound system and his own computer.  The insurance company has been notified and the details are being worked out.  Pastor sent around some pictures of Scherer Memorial Lutheran Church in Chapman, Kansas that had been devastated by a tornado.  He reported that 75 children attended Vacation Bible School this year and many of our people helped out.  It was held at the Lake West Christian Academy.

Christian Education Committee:  Bob Harger asked Pastor Dave about the Sunday School class between services.  Pastor said there has not been enough time to do it this week with the longer service and he felt that he should be available to greet the visitors.    Cruise worship is this Wednesday at 6:30 in Raccoon Hollow Cove.   Jim Chapman has resigned from the Church Council for personal reasons.  Bob Harger is on the Christian Education Committee so there is Council representation from that committee. Sunday School teachers will be invited to attend the Christian Education Committee meeting between services on Sunday, August 3rd

Finance Committee:  Shirley Kirchner handed out the budget worksheets for 2009 to the committees  with representation tonight.  The chair people should prepare the figures that are due at the September meeting.

Long Range Planning Committee has not met this month.

Jennifer Bolton noted that a Mutual Ministry Committee has not yet been formed.  It is part of our church constitution that such a committee be in place.  3 members are appointed by the Church council and 3 members by the pastor.  Pastor Dave made the motion that we establish a Mutual Ministry Committee.  Virgil Norris seconded it.  The committee would meet at least quarterly.  The motion carried.

Joe Poretta did not have a report from Ken because of his surgery, but Joe said our roof had been fixed immediately at a reasonable price.   The property committee is getting bids to repair the window in the gathering room.

Social Ministry will meet at the end of July.  They had no meeting in June.

Stewardship:    There was a very nice crowd at Jason Wittle’s presentation at the Westlake Christian Academy.  He is a graduate of Camdenton High School who went on to play professional football and encourages Christians.  Virgil Norris also told about the skit on Sunday to encourage people to donate for Share The Harvest in Greenview to keep food and non-food items on their shelves.  He said he would keep the congregation informed.

Worship and Music:  Charles Niemann reported that there are two new members of their committee, Kandy Husbands and Marilyn Hays.    He noted that acolytes are so very important to the worship service that the acolyte list should include only those who are really willing to serve.

There is a schedule that has been prepared for drivers to pick up the ladies at the Knolls to bring them to late service.  Audrey Halvorson organized this.

Under new business,  the church council is to appoint someone to complete the number of council members since Jim Chapman resigned.   This person will serve until the next congregational meeting when the congregation will vote on this person.

Pastor Beese said he will have a note in the bulletins for people to donate to the Disaster Response (Tornado and Flood victims) if they wish.  Checks are to be made out to Kent Memorial Lutheran Church and note on the check - Disaster Response.  One check will be mailed out from our church on August 17th.

Diane Ziehl will have devotions at the next meeting on August 19, 2008.

Charles Niemann made the motion to adjourn and Shirley Kirchner seconded it.

The meeting was closed with all praying the prayer that Jesus taught the disciples.

Respectfully submitted,

Jan Kennedy

Acting Secretary
