KENT MEMORIAL LUTHERAN CHURCH CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING February 20, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Ken Mueller, President. Devotion was led by Joe Poretta. Pastor Beese was welcomed to the meeting.
Members Present: Deanne DeJarnette, Pat Garrett, Linda Kimberling, Shirley Kirchner, Harvey Lembke, Ken Mueller, Charles Niemann, Joe Poretta, Tom Reeder and Pastor David Beese
Excused: Jim Chapman, Lois Gonseth and Fred Tetley
The minutes of January 23, 2007 were reviewed. A Youth Committee Report by Deanne DeJarnette should be added to reflect that the Taters & Talent Night has been rescheduled to January 27, 2007 due to inclement weather. A Bike Hike is planned for the spring. A motion was made by Linda Kimberling and seconded by Charles Niemann to accept the minutes with the addition of the Youth Committee report. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report – It was noted that weekly giving was down for the month of January 2007. This could be related to the fact that both services were cancelled one Sunday in January due to an ice storm and another Sunday when attendance was extremely low because of the severe winter weather. The Council will monitor this pattern. A motion was made by Linda Kimberling and seconded by Shirley Kirchner to accept the report as published. Motion carried.
Building Fund Report – Additional payment on the principal was made possible recently due to a gift of stock from a member that was converted to cash and applied to the principal. A motion was made by Linda Kimberling and seconded by Harvey Lembke to accept the report as published.
Pastor’s Report – Pastor Beese reported his Installation Sunday was a “great day,” and that he and Nancy are getting settled into the parsonage. Regular office hours will be Monday through Thursday with most afternoons being spent in pastoral visits. Pastor Beese’s goal is to visit the home of each member, in an effort to learn the layout of the Lake community. New parsonage phone number is 374-5199 and cell phone # 573-552-7046.
Pastor Beese received a request from Bill Ferretti, a member of the Community for Christ Board, to use the facilities at Kent on April 21, 2007 for the Community for Christ seasonal, free distribution of clothes, furniture and appliances. This distribution has been done at Kent on previous occasions and is done outdoors due to the large number of items to be given away, and the tremendous response from the community to receive the donations. The Council was agreeable to make the outdoor parking area available for this event. Pastor Beese will check with Bill Ferretti to determine whether or not a rain date has been set.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Christian Education – An organizational meeting has been planned for the Easter Pageant presentation. Michael and Toni Wagner will co-chair planning the event. Jerry Fitzhugh will direct the pageant.
Evangelism – The Committee will meet in March.
Long-Range Planning – Lois Gonseth has been hospitalized but is expected to be discharged tomorrow.
Ministry Fund – Will meet again in the spring.
Mutual Ministry – Pastor Beese will select three members and the Council will select three members to make up this Committee. This Committee serves as a support group for the pastor and will be selected at a later date.
Property – Joe Poretta made a motion to appoint Bob Ballard, Tom Fee, Vince Yount and Laura Claggett to this Committee. Pat Garrett seconded and the motion carried. Door closers have been installed on the bathroom doors off the Fellowship area. Minor repairs were necessary in the parsonage master bath. The portable road sign will be moved from the State right-of-way. Cleanup of the Easter pageant area will begin soon. Hibdon will be contacted for additional rock for the walkway. With the help of Nip Mohler, excess HVAC materials have been removed from the basement area and donated to Habitat for Humanity. Joe Poretta will ask Jim Kennedy to determine the scope of the snow removal contract to determine whether the sidewalks should be included. Additional drainage work needs to be done behind the church. Joe will be organizing four three-person lawn teams to keep up the grounds this summer. This approach will allow the work to be done in a shorter time frame. Pastor Beese has offered to maintain the lawn at the parsonage. The Massey Ferguson tractor in the garage is no longer considered safe for use around the church and will be put up for sale after its value has been determined. Study will be done on the feasibility of installing a sprinkler system for the area immediately around the church buildings. A container to hold aluminum cans for recycling will be placed behind the garage to allow for better storage. The light for the steeple needs to be replaced and repair work will be necessary on the entry light over the circle drive. Landscaping will be done in the area of the Garagnani Garden and the Columbarium. Ken reported he is organizing an adhoc committee to look at enlarging and improving the outdoor worship area. A cabinet has been requested in the Fellowship area for storage of photo albums of church activities.
Social Ministry – Pat Garrett met with Bill Ferretti to discuss ways in which this Committee can best serve the needs of the community.
Stewardship – Harvey reported the general books have been audited and no problems were identified. More frequent reconciliation of the petty cash account was recommended.
Worship and Music – The Holden Evening Prayer format will be used for the Lenten services. Pastor Beese will utilize a series of short dramas as well. Favorable response has been received for dismissing each group of communicants from the communion rail at the same time. The Committee discussed guidelines for administering communion to non-confirmed children. The antiphonal choir presentation on Ordination Sunday was well received and was encouraged for future services.
Youth Ministry – Deanne expressed appreciation for the support of the Taters & Talent Night. A bike hike is planned along the Katy Trail the weekend of June 15-16. Gail Kruse recently hauled the aluminum cans to Camdenton for recycling. The amount of money we receive per pound can be increased by using the coupon in the Lake Sun Leader. The aluminum can money will be used to begin repairs in the playground area which the young children of the church use every Sunday when weather permits. Souper Bowl of Caring collected $175 for Community for Christ. A Thrivent-sponsored work day is planned for May 5, 2007 at Heit’s Point Lutheran Camp. The senior high class will be invited to participate in this event. Time and Talent forms will be used as a method for determining interested youth workers to join the Youth Committee.
